Communicating in a Person-Centered Way
Empower your health and social care students with the ability to communicate with the people in their care with empathy, respect, and understanding.
In collaboration with:
Hertfordshire and South-East Midlands colleges, funded through the DfE Strategic Development Fund

Scenario
Across this two-module series, learners will be guided by virtual coaches Abeeku and Nola to uncover the essentials for person-centred communication skills through a combination of theory and practice.
With Abeeku and Nola, learners will explore the fundamentals of empathetic communication, including how to build self-esteem in those they care for and working with those individuals to plan their care. They will then embody the role of healthcare practitioner to apply what they’ve learned.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this series, learners will have discovered how to:
- Support a sense of identity to build self-esteem
- Find out how to explore each individual’s history, preferences, wishes, and needs
- Promote and support dignity and respect
- Work together with individuals and those closest to them to plan their care in a way that suits them
- Prioritise the rights of the person they’re caring for, as far as the person’s capacity allows
