About
In the 18 years since its creation, the South Yorkshire Primary Care Workforce & Training Hub has been supporting the growth and development of primary care practitioners across Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham, and Sheffield. Their core work centres around the development of a multi-disciplinary team in primary care through ongoing education and training. They often support newly qualified practitioners, bridging the gap between qualification and the real world.
Goals
- Increase the visibility of the Hub through use of innovative technology
- Enhance their training offerings to suit the development of a multi-disciplinary workforce
- Work towards becoming a National Innovation Centre for Primary Care, a leader in workforce training
I just think it sells itself. If you get people to actually see it and engage with it, it doesn't need anyone like me behind it, pushing it.
But I am happy to wax lyrical to anyone about this and about how we've used it. I think it's great.

Deployment
Start Small
Liz began rolling out one module at a time in group sessions in order to understand how and where Bodyswaps would fit best.
Scale Up
Following initial testing sessions, the wider team at the Hub became aware of how our simulations could fill gaps across a variety of programmes, including clinical and non-clinical roles.
Results
- 94% of learners would recommend Bodyswaps to their peers.
- 100% of learners identified areas to improve on their skills
- 94% increased their understanding of their skills
It very quickly became apparent that actually the ability to practice conversations, whether they're clinical conversations or just general communication skills, in a safe space with no one else listening, and no one paying attention where, if you made a mistake, you hit reset and you could start again, it was amazing and it really opened people's eyes up to that.

Advice
- Innovation isn’t just about the newest tool you can use, it’s also about how innovative you can be at resolving issues, especially when deploying new technologies.
- If your organisation is able, employ or assign someone whose entire role is to deploy new technologies for learning and development, because it takes a lot of commitment, time, and effort to do it in the best way possible.
Future Plans
The Hub have recently moved to a new building which will allow them to develop their training programmes even further. In future, they’d like to move to somewhere with even more space, as part of their ultimate goal of becoming a National Innovation Centre for Primary Care.
They also want to continue accessing new scenarios and technologies with suppliers, to ensure there’s a constant flow of opportunities fit for primary care training
The Wider System
Recently, the work that the Hub has been doing with Bodyswaps and other innovative technologies has begun to be worked into the wider Integrated Care System in South Yorkshire.
Plus, they’ve also been looking at how their work can be integrated into Social Care, assessing training across care homes, community staff, carers and more.
